Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova has made it to the Australian Open quarterfinals after a hard-fought match against Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

Kuznetsova was a confident winner in the opening set, but gave away the second with the same margin.

The decider turned out to be the closest set in the whole encounter, but it was the Russian, who managed to get the vial break, to claim a 6-2 2-6 7-5 to win.

After the match Kuznetsova said she didn’t expect to be doing so well in Melbourne as she hasn’t reached her best physical condition yet.

“I really appreciate my effort,”
the Russian is cited as saying by the tournament's official website. “I’m really happy with the result but disappointed with the second set because I think I got a bit stuck in there.”

Next up for the 27-year-old Muscovite is a clash against World No.1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

Azarenka progressed to the quarterfinals by thrashing another Russian competitor, Elena Vesnina, 6-1 6-1.

Russia’s Maria Kirilenko has also ended her run at the Australian Open after failing to overcome Serena Williams.

The third-seeded American collected an easy victory, giving just two games away to her opponent, 6-2 6-0.
