Hundreds of thousands of people were waving hundreds of Serbian flags in the packed square in front of the National Assembly Building shouting one message only: ‘Kosovo is Serbia’. In peace, without any incidents, more than half a million of people form all parts of Serbia wanted to demonstrate to the world their refusal to accept the illegal taking Kosovo away from Serbia and send a united message that they shall never give up struggle to return Kosovo where it belongs.
Meeting began shortly after 17.00 CET. Led by the PM Vojislav Kostunica, SRS deputy leader Tomislav Nikolic and the Republic of Srpska PM Milorad Dodik, other speakers, movie director Emir Kusturica, Crowned Prince Aleksadar Karadjordjevic, basketball player Dejan Bodiroga and rectors of the universities in Belgrade, Pristina and Nis appeared on the stage. The PM Kostunica said that Serbia as long as it exists as a state shall not recognize unilaterally proclaimed independence of Kosovo and Metohija.
‘As long as we live, Kosovo is Serbia and our brothers in Kosovo are not alone and forgotten! As long as we refuse ultimatums and accept friendship, Serbia is free! The word has been given and the whole world has heard it’, Kostunica said.
He added that ‘Serbia has not violated a single God’s, human or European law and that it extended the hand of friendship and cooperation to all, however, that was not enough’.
SRS deputy leader Tomislav Nikolic said that he would not be at rest as long as Kosovo and Metohija is out of the control of Serbia.
Kostunica addressed the people once again announcing as the last speaker ‘great Serbian and world film director Emir Kusturica’. He called on all to go peacefully to the St. Sava Temple where a church service for the salvation of Kosovo was held.
Kusturica mentioned the famous names of Serbian science, art and sport pointing out that ‘they all are Serbs’ and that ‘Serbia has bought the ticket for the world long time ago’. He reminded that all nations in the world have myths of their own and that the Serbian nation has Kosovo myth. He accused the administration of former American president Clinton to be the most responsible for persecution of Serbs from the Kninska Krajina, bombing of Serbia and all tragedies related to disintegration of former Yugoslavia.
‘After that we entered the most difficult period of our democracy when we delivered to them our president, when they killed our prime minister’, Kusturica said ending his speech that ‘Kosovo shall always be Serbia’.
The meeting was finished by grand church service for salvation of Kosovo held by Bishop Amfilohije in the plateau in front of the St. Sava Temple.
