Russia will host its first Formula One Grand Prix in November 2014 despite earlier reports of delays to the Sochi track construction.

The mayor of the host city Anatoly Pakhomov confirmed the news on Friday. “After the Olympics, in November, the Formula One will be held,” R-Sport quotes Pakhomov as saying.

Consequently the Sochi event will be one of the last races of the season. The provisional 2014 schedule is expected to be announced after the end of the 2013 season.

Last year the Russian media reported serious delays in the construction of the Sochi track, but Pakhomov believes there is no threat to the race.

“Everything is going according to schedule,”
the mayor said, adding that any delays are unthinkable because they would damage “the honor of the state”.

The Sochi track construction kicked off in 2011 after the city was contracted to host seven races from 2014 to 2020.
