Defending champions, Dynamo Moscow, beat in-form SKA Saint Petersburg 3-2 on the road, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Avangard Omsk from taking the lead in the KHL standings.

It’s is currently one of the biggest rivalries in the KHL, as Cup holders Dynamo Moscow faced this season's hot favorites SKA on Saturday.

And it was St Pete, who opened on a powerplay after Dmitry Kalinin fired from the blue line, 1-0.  

Dynamo were quick to level though, and it was all down to SKA's goalie Ilya Ezhov, whose terrible blunder turned into Nikita Lukin's first KHL goal.

SKA regained their lead through Gleb Klimenko and this time round the net minder could've also done better, 2-1.

The second period saw the Muscovites equalize again as Janne Jalasvaara unloaded a wild slap shot to make it.
And early in the third period it was Sergey Konkov, who scored the winner for Dynamo, 2-3.

Their first line led by Aleksandr Ovechkin are back overseas to the NHL, but Dynamo Moscow still look confident after taking Spartak down 3-1 earlier this week.

Avangard Omsk are now  a great force in the KHL’s Eastern conference after The Hawks won both their home games this week to go top of the league.

After beating CSKA 4-3 on Wednesday, they scored four unanswered goals against Czech rivals Lev Prague.

Salavat Yulaev, who are still in the chase for a play-off spot in the East claimed an important victory at Metallurg Magnitogorsk, 4-1.

But they were then edged out by Traktor, with local idol and one of Russia's biggest talents Evgeny Kuznetsov netting another little thing of beauty in a 3-1 win.

And back in the West, it’s Donbass, who are making the headlines.

The Ukrainian side have a good chance to make it to the play-offs in their rookie season. Despite being sunk by Torpedo in a shootout they dominated Atlant Moscow Region, 3-0.
