The New Year started with a blunder for world tennis king Novak Djokovic after the Serb lost to 52nd-ranked Bernard Tomic of Australia in straight sets.
The match was part of the Hopman Cup, a commercial team exhibition tournament.
Several hours later, fellow Serb Ana Ivanovic tied a best-of-three match against hosts Australia in their group-stage fixture, and then the Serbs edged Tomic and Ashleigh Barty in the mixed doubles decider.
Djokovic started his season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Andreas Seppi on Monday, despite admitting he was suffering from jet lag, but lost a mixed doubles match the same day.
A week ago, Djokovic retained his title at an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi.
