A piano that made an appearance in the classic 1940s Oscar-winning World War II movie Casablanca was sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $600,000.
The piano's sale marks the 70th anniversary of the Oscar-winning World War II classic, which is largely set in the Moroccan port city of Casablanca, then part of unoccupied French North Africa.
The piano was used for the song "As Times Goes By", which was featured in one of the film’s most iconic scenes.
The piano, which was played by Dooley Wilson’s character Sam as Humphrey Bogart’s and Ingrid Bergman's characters toast with glasses of champagne, was sold to an unknown buyer.
In the unforgettable scene, Bogart's character Rick pronounces his famed line: "Here's looking at you, kid."
The piano was put on the auction block by its Japanese owner. The lot failed to meet the experts’ expectations, who thought it would sell for as much as $1.2 million. The previous owner purchased the piano for $154,000 at an auction in the 1980s.
