Season leader Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull is going to be first on the grid for Formula 1’s maiden Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
Vettel clocked 1 minute and 35.657 seconds in Q3 to bag the 35th pole position of his F1 career.
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton produced the second best result of the day, just ahead of the other Red Bull man, Mark Webber.
Meanwhile, Vettel’s main rival for the title Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso will start the race from ninth position.
There’s ten points separating the two top drivers, with two races left before the end of the 2012 season.
Russia’s Vitaly Petrov was ahead of his Caterham partner, Heikki Kovalainen, and will start from 21st spot on Sunday.
But it was still a qualifying session to forget for Caterham as they were beaten by both Marussia cars for the first time this season.
Formula 1 is making its US return at the Circuit of the Americas after five years of absence.
