A powerful twister has torn through the American state of Mississippi, leaving dozens hurt and hundreds of homes destroyed. The tornado comes hours after a major blizzard killed at least nine people across the northeast of the country.

The weather service has counted three separate twisters throughout Mississippi, AP reported.

The disaster damaged mainly the city of Hattiesburg, including its university campus, with 10 people injured in the surrounding Forrest County. The university released a statement saying no one was hurt, but that it was under a state of emergency.

Three more people were reported injured to the west of Hattiesburg, in Marion Country, with no deaths from the disaster having been reported yet.

In the nearby town of Petal, the storm destroyed over 100 homes, with people sustaining only minor injuries.

In the neighboring southwestern state of Alabama, authorities indicated that a series of seven tornadoes hit, including one that damaged 46 homes in Clark County.

However, emergency officials pointed out to AP that on the whole, the injuries weren’t really serious, with most of the people “walking wounded.”

Massive power outages were reported in the two states.

The disaster follows a massive blizzard that killed at least nine people in the American northeast, leaving hundreds of homes destroyed. Authorities declared an emergency in five states.
