Serbia’s opposition leaders say they will work together to press for early elections and the ouster of the pro-Western government.

Opposition have stepped up pressure against President Boris Tadic after he gave up the plan to challenge Kosovo’s independence at the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York.

Nationalist leaders say Tadic’s move is harming Serbia’s efforts to retain claim over its former province. Former Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica says “we must stop Serbia’s disastrous fall.”

Tadic agreed with EU officials to water down a Serbian resolution for the Sept. 9 gathering. He has said this was important for Serbia’s EU future.

General elections are due in 2012 but opposition hope to force a vote for next year.
