More than 180 websites banned in Russia

The head of Roskomnadzor (the Russian Federal Surveillance Service for Mass Media and Communications), Alexander Zharov, stated that more than 180 websites had been added to the register of banned online resources, Arguments and Facts newspaper wrote.

According to him, the agency has received more than 6,000 complaints from citizens since 1 November about the presence of negative, in their view, information on the Internet, Rosbalt said. Zharov said that the agency "receives about 200-300 calls a day and they are all handled within a day."

Safe Internet League that includes largest companies of the Russian Internet industry has started to collect suggestions from citizens and experts to improve the work of the register of banned sites, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta wrote.

Internet providers cooperate with Roskomnadzor and block the sites that contain prohibited content. Administrations of social networks cooperate with Roskomnadzor too, struggling with inappropriate content.

On November 1, the agency has conducted ten different meetings devoted to the implementation of amendments to the law on the protection of children against negative information. The amendments regulate the register of banned sites. The restrictions apply primarily to child porn, instructions for committing suicide and manufacturing drugs.
